Another day, another story…GMB Panthers go down in Coventry

After taking the lead on an early powerplay the GMB Nottingham Panthers gave up three first period goals including two on the powerplay but had a massive lifeline early in the second period on a long five-on-three powerplay which they failed to take. Blaze ran out deserved 5-1 winners.

Jeff Brown was back from suspension and Henry Pacl was in nets for Nottingham who took the lead when Alex Nikiforuk screened the keeper and Andy Sertich fired home from the blueline on a powerplay in the third minute.

Blaze equalized on an odd-man rush under two minutes later when they scored at the back post and they repeated the move on a powerplay to take the lead just past the 13th minute mark. In the 17th minute they scored another powerplay goal on a rebound and the home side led 3-1 at the first break.

Three slashing penalties in a row gave Panthers a two man advantage for three minutes but they couldn’t find a way past Stewart in the Blaze goal in the early second period exchanges and when Panthers made a meal of getting the puck out of their own zone they paid the full price as Blaze swept the crumbs home for their fourth just past the half-way mark.

Panthers had some clear-cut chances to get back into the game but failed to score and in a game that won’t be difficult to forget it was a similar story in the third period where a fluff at the blueline on the powerplay allowed Blaze to break out and convert a one-on-one short-handed goal in the 43rd minute to wrap up the scoring.
