Battling second place finish for Panthers at Napoleon Cup

The GMB Nottingham Panthers will finish in the runners-up spot in the four team Napoleon Cup in Amiens, France after they went down 7-3 in their final game against University Three Rivers from Quebec.

Matt Carter defied the odds to play despite an injury picked up in Saturday's win over Amiens but Stephen Schultz was sidelined by injury and Panthers medical team pulled Miika Wiikman half-way the game on Sunday as a precaution after he suffered a "strain".

UQTR took the lead on a first period powerplay which took a deflection through traffic and the goal separated the sides at the break.

There was a feisty start to the middle period sparked by a hit on Dan Spang who got his own back a few minutes later to draw a charging penalty which Panthers killed and then immediately equalised when Geoff Waugh fired a home a one-timer from the right point.

Another powerplay goal for the university side had them back in front and they stretched the lead further on a double-powerplay strike. Wiikman left the action soon after and Dan Green took over in goal for Panthers.

UQTR went 4-1 up before Matt Carter spun round to score to make it 4-2 but a back door tap in had the Canadian side up 5-2 at the second break.

They further stretched it off rebounds in the opening minutes of the third period before Jeff Brown scored from the front of the goal short-handed for Panthers. Final score Panthers 3 UQTR 7.
