GMB Panthers beat Braehead 5-4 in Friday night league action

The GMB Nottingham Panthers picked up the points in regulation time in a game which saw them score all five of their goals in the first period.

After taking a two goal lead they were tied up by two brisk visitors’ goals just 19 seconds apart before establishing what should have been a commanding 5-2 lead at the first break.

Clan swapped netminders at the start of the middle period and there was no scoring throughout a period which saw the first penalties of the game called either side of the half-way mark and both against the Panther.

Clan found their scoring punch with the man advantage at the third attempt in the last period and when they fired home from the blueline with two-and-a-half minutes to go it made for a tight finale to the game but Panthers held on to their – by then – one goal lead.

In that shoot-out of a first period the visitors had mou8nted the first attack of the game only to see Panthers counter-attack and then pick off a clearance before Matt Carter picked his spot from between the hash-marks after just 66 seconds.

Latvian Deivids Sarkanis stole forward to also pick his spot for his first ever Panthers’ goal in the fourth minute. After Clan had their double-blitz for a comeback another attempted clearance by the away team was gloved down at the blueline by Panthers and the puck was teed up for David Clarke to fire home at 12.50.

Sarkanis stretched to reach a loose puck and backhand home low for his second of the game and in the last minute of the period Erik Lindhagen steamed down the right wing and dropped the post off at the top of the circle for in the incoming Jeff Brown to deliver a cracker of a shot and a three goal cushion that ultimately proved to be enough for the points.
