GMB Panthers claim a point but leaders Cardiff snag OT winner

Saturday night hockey returned to the arena in Nottingham with a brilliant game which was played at break-neck speed in the first period. Nottingham outshot the visitors in the first period but fell behind to a blast from left point. Brian McGrattan and Robert Farmer picked the Devils’ pockets on their blueline and Farmer carried the puck in to equalise upstairs in the 17th minute.

The second period was less dramatic but Nottingham deservedly took the lead on a sweet passing move finished into the bottom corner by Robert Lachowicz at 30.31 for his one hundredth goal in all Elite League competitions and Panthers were up 2-1 at the second break.

David Clarke was back from injury and he finished an early third period powerplay clinic to stretch the lead but Cardiff showed why they are at the top of the standings when they did something similar on a powerplay of their own to reduce the deficit.

Devils piled on the pressure looking for an equaliser which came off a rebound in the 49th minute and the game went to overtime.

Miika Wiikman stonewalled the visitors three times. Jeff Dimmen was hurt by an unpunished bad slash after Panthers had a couple of chances of their own.

Panthers netminder could do nothing when a Cardiff got a man free at the back post to snag the extra point at 63.56.
