GMB Panthers go 2 & 0 with shootout win

A completely different kind of win highlighted all the skills of this GMB Panthers side. In the face of a lot of penalties, the kill units put in some incredible work to allow the Panthers to seal their second win in a shootout.

The first period didn't really catch fire until the final 7 minutes. It predictably started with both teams feeling each other out, typical for opponents who've never encountered one another. The game sparked to life when Farmer put away a puck that squared across the net, only to be waved off for the Panthers having a man in the crease.

Then Dimmen got called for a slashing penalty and Beibarys struck. Just over a minute into the penalty kill, Atyrau got the PPG after a strong, one time shot from far out got tipped into Wiikman's net.

The Panthers didn't let their heads fall and strong pressure led to two penalties against Atyrau and Nottingham needed just 40 seconds of 5 on 3 to punish the Kazakh's. It came from some patient exchanges between Spang and Williams, giving Jason a shot on goal that he put away clinically.

The 2nd period started dramatically with a collision between Chris Lawrence and the Atyrau netminder near the edge of the Beibarys zone. The Atyrau netty was unable to carry on playing so their backup came into play. He was only truly tested a couple of times after that with neither team making much of a mark on the game.

The 3rd period saw the Panthers in trouble, having to deal with nearly 4 minutes of continuous PK. They managed to keep their net clean throughout though and once they were back to full strength, were able to reduce the huge pressure they'd been under for the opening minutes of the period.

Then with less than 7 minutes in the game Brian McGrattan scored to give the Panthers a slender lead. It wasn't enough however as, while awaiting their power play, Atyrau took advantage of a 6 on 5 to get an equaliser.

The final five minutes saw the Panthers put on a true display of guts and character as they killed two consecutive penalties and unable to regularly change lines.

They managed to fight through it and force the game into overtime. Nottingham started OT with a man advantage due to a penalty being called on Atyrau at the death of the third, however they were unable to capitalise. The GMB Panthers went close a few times, but Atyrau's backup netminder was equal to it.

The game therefore went to penalty shots where two saves from Wiikman and two excellent penalties from Carter and Lawrence, saw the Panthers seal a very hard fought win!
