GMB Panthers through to cup semi-final with 3-1 (6-4) win over the Clan

The GMB Nottingham Panthers delivered a solid, competent gameplan to reach this season’s Challenge Cup semi-finals where they will meet Sheffield in January.

Clan’s shots on goal tally was boosted with a late rally when they pulled their keeper for an extra skater and came to life but they could only beat Miika Wiikman in the home nets once and the final score on the night of 3-1 meant for a 6-4 aggregate victory for the cup holders.

Panthers outshot the visitors more than two-to-one in the first period and when Stephen Schultz slid the puck forward to Robert Farmer on the powerplay his backhand shot flew into the roof of the net in the 13th minute.

There was more one-sided play in the second period and Schultz again assisted on the only goal when he fed Alex Nikiforuk on the short-side and he one-timed the puck into the net to double the lead.

A third period powerplay saw a neat solo effort from Nikiforuk as he dangled passed the defence and then squeezed his own rebound home in the 49th minute. Nottingham outshot Clan three-to-one in the middle period.

Miika Wiikman had made the big saves when needed to stonewall the occasional Clan counter-attack but he was beaten late on after Clan took their time-out with 1.51 left in the game to go with six skaters but the tie was done and dusted by then.
