GMB Panthers win their second Continental Cup encounter

Another day and another big win for the GMB Panthers. Final score in the Panthers' second game of the tournament was Nottingham 12-1 Istanbul.

Henry Pacl was in the nets for the Panthers from start to finish while the Turkish team goalie made a string of excellent saves.

Panthers outshot the opposition 37 to three in the first period and led 3-0 at the break with goals from Alex Nikiforuk, Petr Kalus and Ollie Betteridge.

Brad Moran picked a pocket to advance on a power play and convert soon afterwards and just before half-way the Istanbul coach swapped goalies with the guy going off getting an ovation from the Panthers' bench.

The new keeper's first job was to fish the puck out of the net after Matt Carter scored and a ricochet credited to Logan MacMillan made it 7-0 when he combined with Robert Farmer to score short-handed.

Another power play goal saw Nikiforuk tip home his second of the game for 8-0 at the second break.

The third period opened with an early penalty and when Steve Lee fired on target from the blue line, Brian McGrattan tipped onto the pads before lifting his own rebound home. LIndhagen jammed home his second when the Turkish side failed to clear or cover in a scramble round their net at 47.40 and the same player danced out of the corner to rifle home his third a few minutes later.

A few seconds after that it was 12-0 when Carter turned home a pass to the front of goal and the only question left was would Henry Pacl hang on to his shut-out? Sadly for the GMB Panthers, but much to the delight of the Istanbul team playing in the biggest game of their lives, they turned a rebound home for a consolation goal with 2.14 on the clock.

Pacl was still named man of the match for Panthers having made a number of big stops in an albeit one-sided game.

The GMB Panthers take on the Latvian champions on Sunday afternoon in a game that will decide who progresses from to the 3rd round of the Continental Cup.

Faceoff is at 3:30 GMT.
