Panthers start 2017 with win over the Capitals

The GMB Nottingham Panthers rounded off their holiday programme with a 4-2 victory over the visiting Edinburgh Capitals on Bank Holiday Monday.

Alex Nikiforuk was hauled down in the fourth minute and finished deliciously on the resulting penalty shot to beat stand-in goalie McLaughlin to open the scoring and when the keeper made a mistake and poked the puck out to Jeff Brown he doubled the lead in the 17th minute.

Caps got one back close-range just as Panthers were about to end a penalty kill at the half-way stage of the game but the two goal cushion was back on the board after Erik Lindhagen made room for himself and then reversed his pass across the face of goal to the unmarked Brad Moran who bundled home at 39.12.

Vorobyev gave the visitors hope when he slammed a skate into the ice to pull himself round 360 degrees to sweep home low in the 49th minute but before the Caps could pull their goalie for an extra skater to push for a late equaliser Robert Farmer’s shot rebounded to Chris Lawrence and he fired home at 59 minutes exactly to wrap up the scoring.
