PANTHERS WRAP UP WEEKEND WITH BIG WIN OVER FIFE

A solid sixty minutes produced the goods and a string of excellent goals as the GMB Panthers made it a four point weekend with a 7-1 victory over the Fife Flyers.

Flyers (who were held up by an accident and diversion en route to Nottingham) were three down in eight-and-a-half minutes.

A big hit by Steve Lee won the puck for the opener and Brandon Benedict and Chris Capraro scampered up the ice to score the opener with Cappy getting the final touch.

On a powerplay Bob Wren was left in acres of space and powered up at the back post and then his sharp from behind the net set up Benedict for the first of what proved to be a hat-trick for the eventual man of the match.

In the second period Nick Anderson fired through traffic to score in his last game for the Panthers after handing in his notice.

Benedict got the first of three more goals in the final period, Leigh Salters weighed in from the doorstep and Benny’s hat-trick at 52.50 saw him on the way to the man of the match award from game sponsors iOptix.

Neil Conway lost his shut-out when Flyers grabbed a late consolation goal in the 57th minute. Along the way Panthers medical team pulled Chris Capraro and Bob Wren out of the line-up after they picked up injuries. There will be further assessments during the week on the extent of their problems.

Elsewhere, Belfast beat Cardiff (2-1), Braehead won at Sheffield (2-4), Coventry beat Hull (5-2) and Dundee won at Edinburgh (3-5).
