Point for Panthers but hot goalie denies them both

The GMB Nottingham Panthers came up against the best visiting netminder performance of the season in the shape of Fife’s Shane Owen and after a 2-2 draw in regulation the Flyers went on to clinch the extra point in the shoot-out.

Brian McGrattan pounced on a loose puck on the Flyers’ blueline and took it in to score the only goal of the first period at 11.59.

Flyers turned in a powerplay rebound to equalise just past the half-way mark and the teams started the third period tied at 1-1.

Nottingham continued to dominate and peppered the visiting goal with chance after chance and eventually took the lead when Alex Nikiforuk poked home a rebound but after Panthers hit the pipework for a second time in the game and after another lengthy spell of pressure on their goal the visitors broke out and fired home another equalizer off the right wing with just under ten minutes left.

Both sides brought out the best in the opposing keepers in overtime and Panthers killed off a late call for too many men to take the match to the shoot-out where Fife scored the only goal in the round-robin section to pinch the extra point.
