Round robin defeat for Panthers in opening cup game at Coventry

The GMB Nottingham Panthers suffered a 3-1 defeat in the opening game of their round-robin section in this season's Challenge Cup.

Panthers paid the price for twice failing to back-check forwards jumping into the play first at the back post and then in front of the net as he Blaze jumped to a two goal first period lead.

Panthers were without Stephen Schultz who has a niggling injury picked up pre-season in France. Recent signing Jindrich Pacl was in nets for Nottingham, who battled back into the first period but couldn't find a way past keeper Stewart in the home goal.

Panthers had the better of the play in the middle period and outshot the home side but again couldn't get the puck into the back of the net.

During four-on-four play in the third period the Blaze stretched the lead when a Panthers stick deflected the puck in for a third home goal.

Geoff Waugh sent a long range pass through the middle channel and new captain Brad Moran latched on to the puck and took it in to score a low backhand goal for a 3-1 scoreline.

As Panthers piled on the pressure in search for more, Blaze broke away one-on-one and Jindrich made a great save, he was later pulled for the last two minutes as Panthers tried to force more at the other end and although there was late drama around the home team's crease there was to be no further scoring.
