Two wins in two nights over arch-rivals Sheffield

The GMB Nottingham Panthers made it two 3-2 wins over arch-rivals Sheffield in as many Christmas nights in a thrilling game in front of a sold-out National Ice Centre.

After winning by the same scoreline in Sheffield on Boxing Day Panthers snagged the points in each game with a game-winning goal in each match by new signing Jason Williams.

Stephen Schultz, with his parents in the crowd, hammered home the opening goal on a powerplay in the eighth minute. The home side went close a handful of times to doubling their lead but Steelers hit two goals from the closest of ranges to take the lead before the first break.

Panthers upped their game in the second period and hit the pipes a couple of times while at the other end netminder Miika Wiikman (on his way to another man of the match award, game sponsors AJKM Hockey Barn) made a clutch of highlight reel saves.

In the third period the Panthers goalie sparked a coming together of the players when he protected himself after a dig following a cover up save after a short-handed breakaway by Sheffield and ultimately it led to a five on three powerplay for Panthers which was blasted home by Schultz from long range to tie the game at 49.06.

With Sheffield seemingly targeting Schultz for special attention Panthers broke away down the ice on an odd-man rush and new boy Jason Williams smashed his second GWG in as many nights to seal the victory for the home side at 58.04.

Steelers pulled their goalie in a last gasp effort to snatch the equaliser. One Nottingham attempt on the empty net was spoiled by a stick from the team bench but the insurance goal wasn’t needed anyway as Nottingham saw out the last minute without conceding in a thrilling game between two great teams.
