D-MAN BJORKUNG PENS DEAL WITH PANTHERS

Swedish defenceman Victor Bjorkung has penned a deal with The Nottingham Panthers for the 2023-24 season.

The 30-year-old arrives at the Motorpoint Arena after an extensive career in Europe which has seen him play in the top leagues in Denmark, Norway and Slovakia.

Bjorkung iced for Malmo and Djurgardens in the elite level of junior hockey in Sweden before moving to play college hockey in North America, which included two years with NCAA side Ohio State University.

He returned to Sweden for his first year as a professional, playing for Timra IK and IK Pantern in the highly-rated Allsvenskan league.

In 2017-18, he led the scoring for defenceman in goals (14) in Denmark and added 17 assists for 31 points for Hvidovre Fighters, before winning the playoffs in Norway the following year with Frisk Asker.

Last year, Bjorkung split his time between Slovakian side HC Banska Bystrica and Sonderjyske of Denmark.

Jonathan Paredes, Panthers Head Coach, said: "Victor is a great skater and a player that is able to be responsible on both sides of the ice.

"He plays hard in all situations and is a player that has a very high compete level. Victor has extensive Europe experience which will be important for us.

"We look forward to having him with us in Nottingham and being part of an exciting roster."

Bjorkung said: "I have done my research on the club and the city and I am very excited to come to Nottingham.

"I like to play offensive and I do enjoy it a lot, but as I get older I like to take responsibility in my own end as well. I take a lot of pride in my d-zone but the offensive side is my type of game.

"Speaking with Jonathan (Paredes), I like the way he wants to play hockey and I think that will fit my game really well and then it's up to me to deliver."

Bjorkung will wear #91 for the Panthers this season.
